Accessibility Statement
Last reviewed: 1 November 2026
Wakinga is a community heritage project. We want everyone — including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, or magnification — to be able to read and navigate this site.
Conformance target
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This is the current international standard for accessible web content.
What we've done
- Semantic HTML with a single, meaningful H1 per page
- Text contrast tested against the AA threshold (4.5:1 for body, 3:1 for large)
- All interactive elements reachable by keyboard
- Visible focus indicators
- Skip-to-content link for screen-reader and keyboard users
- Respects the operating system's "reduce motion" preference
- Alt text on every meaningful image; decorative images marked
aria-hidden - Touch targets sized to at least 24×24 CSS pixels
- Native
<details>for expandable sections (works without JavaScript)
Known limitations
We are a small team and this site is early-stage. If you find a barrier, please tell us — we want to fix it. Known gaps we are aware of:
- Some animations may not pause on demand (they do respect reduce-motion)
- Only English is available; a Swahili translation is planned
